Chinese news – Group Photo – Children also join in the rally

Posted by Save Sabah On December - 10 - 2008

It is most heartening to watch the many children joining in the protest against the coal-fired power plant. Unless one is blind one should see that the whole world is against this most damaging power plant.

While the federal and state ministers, among other dignitaries, were showing off and celebrating the natural beauty of Sandakan during a Bird Fair held in Sepilok were they thinking of doing it for the last time?

Put up the coal-fired power plant and this will become true. Not only will there not be any more birds to watch but eventually all animal lives, marine lives, all other form of lives including human lives will be affected. Is this what we want ?

Of course we are not talking about the immediate effects as there will be none but in the long run our children and grand children and all future generation will live to suffer the consequences of our doing. Let us all do the right thing to safeguard the environment for future generation who are our hope of tomorrow.

Sandakan People DON’T WANT Coal Fire power Plant.

The Government should SCRAPE it.

(05/12 Sandakan)Member of state cabinet also state assembly man of Elopura, YB Au kam Wah had expressed his view on the issue of the proposed coal fire power plant in Sandakan. He said he felt shocked to know from yesterday’s paper reported that Tenaga National berhad had indeed already signed an agreement in February this year with China based company to build a coal fire power plant in Sandakan.

He pointed out that the one sided decision from TNB was not following proper normal procedures. He said he had reflected his concern during the state assembly meetings. According to Au, all along the state government highlighted that environmental impact study must be conducted before any decision made. Further more, Minister of tourism and environment had assured that any environmental hazarded industry must comply with EIA.

He reckons that such EIA report must be unveiled to the public and let the public comment on the issue before the governments make any decisions.

As a elected leader, Au said that the opposition voice of the people is loud and clear.

He also urges the state government to declare its stand on the coal fire power plant issue as soon as possible to reinstate the confidence of this government.

Au also criticized TNB’s one sided decision making had breached the standard procedures.

The people would not have known such agreement if not the China contractor had make a press conference.

Dutch Court Annuls Nuon Power Plant Permit {SABAHkini}

Posted by Save Sabah On December - 6 - 2008

AMSTERDAM – A Dutch court annulled a permit for Dutch utility Nuon to build a multi-fuel power plant in the port of Eemshaven on Wednesday, after environmental groups raised concerns about its construction.

Nuon shareholders approved the 1.5 billion euros ($1.90 billion) project last year, which aimed to build a plant in the port that could generate electricity from coal, gas and biomass, with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts.

But environmental groups including Greenpeace as well as some local residents opposed a permit awarded to Nuon by the province of Groningen and took the matter to court.

"This judgment should make investors in coal power stations think twice," said Rolf Schipper from Greenpeace Netherlands in a statement.

Risks from Coal Burning REAL

Posted by Save Sabah On December - 6 - 2008

“ Risks from Coal Burning REAL. Stop the INTIMIDATION !

A certain assemblyman attempted to intimidate the masses as reported in a local newspaper recently : “Don’t blame Govt for power woes if …..” .

It bemused me to note the limited viewpoints expressed by the mal-informed assemblyman.

The concern and evidence-based details highlighted by the Sandakan Anti-coal Fired Power Plant are both real and worrying.

The world wide concern in many parts of the coal using countries are testimonies of the real threats and risks posed by the dangerous emissions of coal plants. Many countries are halting or opting for green alternatives or alternatives that are less damaging with much lower level of emissions.

RAYMOND TAN OWES SANDAKAN PEOPLE EXPLANATION AND APOLOGY

Posted by Save Sabah On December - 5 - 2008

Raymond Tan, elected by the Sandakan people to represent them, owes the people an explanation and an apology. As recently as two weeks ago he was still saying that this project has not been confirmed and said nothing about the contract having been signed already.

As representative of the people he should keep the people closely informed instead of pulling the wool over their eyes all the time.

He should now apologize to the people and as our representative, he should execute our wish and in his capacity as DCM and Minister in charge of Infrastructure, exercise his authority to stop this project!!

CONTRACT FOR COAL-FIRED POWER PLANT SIGNED ON 2008-02-20

Posted by Save Sabah On December - 5 - 2008

SHOCKING NEWS

CONTRACT FOR COAL-FIRED POWER PLANT SIGNED ON 2008-02-20

In a meeting between the Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce and a Chinese delegation, the director of a China company, China National Electric Equipment Corporation, advised the meeting that the contract for the coal-fired power plant had actually been signed on the 20th February 2008.

She further advised that the original location for this project was Lahad Datu then Tawau was considered but now Sandakan is the place subject to the evaluation environmental report. The purpose of her trip here is to have an understanding of the local condition as well as listening to public opinion.

On matter of local condition, Mr. Stephen Wong, secretary of Chinese Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the anti coal committee, told the China delegation that Sandakan, with the name of Nature City, is indeed a natural eco tourist place and we do not welcome anyone who will spoil this for us although we welcome any form of trade talk except coal power plant.

Much as we appreciate the need of a power plant, we willdefinitely oppose the construction of any coal-fired power plant which will pollute the environment and cause extensive damages to health and lives of all forms. But any other alternative form of clean energy generation is most welcome. Such is the sentiment and opinion of the Sandakan people.

LET’S US WORK TOGETHER TO STOP THIS COAL POWER PLANT AND PRESERVE OUR CLEAN AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.
