Study on Sabah wind power potential

Kota Kinabalu: A professional wind mapping survey under way throughout Sabah should soon identify specific sites where wind power potentials can be tapped.

Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation officials together with wind power engineers have been making the field rounds, especially in Kudat.

Their interest in Kudat is based on a Nasa wind chart which indicated a pattern of consistent winds in the tip of Sabah.

With rapidly increasing efficiency of wind turbines, its potential for electricity generation looks "promising," some engineers believe.

Sirim Division on Renewable Energy officials were among the survey tours which actually began in October last year and repeated twice recently.

The initial interest is focused mainly on identifying possible sites to start four pilot monitoring stations to determine the wind speed and power density.

"With respect to this, the Sabah Environmental Protection Association (Sepa) is proud to announce that one of the leading professional service providers in macro (5km x 5km) and micro (40km x 40km) high resolution wind mapping – Hermesrns Sdn. Bhd, has already initiated the ground work," said Sepa President Wong Tack.

"The objective is to accurately predict the complex wind regime found in Sabah which is not clear up until now," he said.

"Sepa feels that a professional wind mapping survey must first be carried out not only in Kota Marudu but also Kudat and throughout Sabah once and for all before turbines are put in place," Wong said.

Wong lauded recent positive statements from both Datuk Max Ongkili – Federal Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation and also Datuk Masidi Manjun – State Minister for Culture, Tourism and Environment on the wind energy.

"Sepa is delighted to hear that wind energy is being considered as a alternative source for power generation at this point in time," he said.

"At the same time, careful and proper study to understand landscape features, wind channels and velocity to know how winds flow as well as potential impediments such as trees and hills will make all the difference," Wong said.

Ongkili had said earlier that the idea of setting up a pilot windmill project initiative was to study the potential of wind power for isolated communities.

Wong noted there were similar pilot wind power projects in the past in a remote spot in Sabah which didn’t work because of the lack of proper studies.

"This is why we believe proper professional wind mapping is important," Wong insisted.

He said once the proper studies had been done, microscale modeling, high resolution colour wind speed and power density maps will be drawn up for the study region.

The wind map results will identify regions where wind turbines would function and those that are unlikely.

"Sepa will then be able to use these wind speed and power density maps to assist in the designation of a potential site boundary," Wong said.

"Hermesns can then use it together the results of the microscale modeling to undertake a pre-feasibility analysis to design a wind farm site that tally with the potential generation capacity," he argued.

Wong said any green energy-focussed organisation, institution or even individuals who are keen on getting involved in this initiative can email hermesrns@yahoo.com

Coal power is 19th Century technology. (watch video below)

Hello TNB! We are in the 21st Century.

TNB chairman may want to be in the 19th century, but I’m sure we Malaysians, especially Sabahans do not want to keep him company there.

Lets move forward and take the critical global-warming situation into account and do our part.

Listen to the scientist say: "Clean Coal" is an Oxy-moron – looks like we have plenty of those here.

Coal power is 19th Century technology.

We must save environs, says Sabah-born Wong

KUALA LUMPUR: Time is scarce if the environment is to be preserved for future generations, says Australia’s Climate Change and Water Minister Penny Wong.

“We need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We must act now because of what will happen. The evidence is compelling,” she said yesterday.

Wong said this in her keynote address entitled “Moving to a Lower Carbon Future – Perspective from Australia,” at the Green Design Forum here organised by the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM).

Wong: ‘I still come back and visit Malaysia every year’

The Malaysian-born Wong said climate change must be tackled with innovative ideas and pragmatic solutions, while still maintaining economic growth, which was not easy but a necessary move.

“Making a decision not to act is making a decision that those who come after us must bear the cost,” she said later at a press conference.

The prolonged drought in some parts of Australia and an increase in temperatures had helped raise awareness of the need to address the climate change issue, she added.

Wong said Australia, which relied heavily on coal, was committed to its 2010 deadline for a carbon-trading scheme to help reduce carbon pollution. It also plans to increase the use of renewable energy.

She praised Malaysia for planning to have a Green Building Index (GBI) for commercial and residential properties to help increase sustainability.

The GBI, to be launched by PAM and the Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia this April, is a rating system that evaluates the environmental impact and performance of buildings.

The evaluation will be based on six criteria – energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, sustainable site planning and management, water efficiency, material and resources, and innovation.

Wong, who was born in Kota Kinabalu, still holds Malaysia close to her heart although she left for Australia when she was eight years old with her mother and brother.

Her architect father is the technical adviser to the Kota Kinabalu mayor.

“I still come back and visit Malaysia every year. But I can’t really speak Mandarin though but you have to blame my father for that as he speaks to me in English,” she quipped as her father looked on lovingly.

The short-haired, 40-year-old was elected into the Senate in 2001 and was the first Asian-born Australian federal minister.

Her father Francis Wong beamed with pride as he talked about his daughter.

“I am very proud of her. She was very active in political debates even during her university days,” he added.

Leung Tian Fatt Says:
December 28th, 2008 at 5:43 am

An environmental disaster of epic proportions just happened in Tennessee. Monday night 2.6 million cubic yards (the equivalent of 525.2 million gallons, 48 times more than the Exxon Valdez spill by volume) of coal ash sludge broke through a dike of a 40-acre holding pond at TVA’s Kingston coal-fired power plant covering 400 acres up to six feet deep, damaging 12 homes and wrecking a train.

According to the EPA the cleanup will take at least several weeks, but could take years. Officials also said that the magnitude of this spill is such that the entire area could be declared a federal superfund site.
