We, the Sandakan Anti Coal Power Plant Action Committee, comprises of 30 NGOs and together with all the rest of the environmentalists, echo with Tan Sri Bernard Tampok the minister in the Prime minister proposal to stop the transport of our natural gas from Kimanis, Sabah to Bintulu, Sarawak which is 500km away. We strongly support your good office and noble mission to make our natural gas remain in the possession of Sabah, to be fully utilised and enjoyed by our Sabah people.
We hope such natural recourses can be fully processed in Sabah and not only be utilised for the purpose of housing power in Sandakan but also to be used in other manufacturing industries in Sabah.
We, the committee representing the majority of the voices of Sandakan people, pledge to his good office, to build a natural gas power plant in east coast instead of coal power plant since natural gas is considered to be more energy efficiency, a fossil fuel which has lower carbon dioxide emissions of energy per unit and because it is suitable for use in high efficiency combined cycle power stations.
We wish to stress again to Tan Sri the serious hazards coal can cause to human health and the environment as a whole. Coal is the dirtiest of all fossil fuels that emits double the amount of carbon dioxide than other fossil fuels. In 300 Mega-watt coal power plants, two tons of carbon dioxide will be emitted more than the normal emission of carbon dioxide by other fuels of only 1 ton. This has added to the problems of global warming and acid rain. Sandakan is proclaimed and famously known to everyone as a “Nature City” and we intend to keep it this way. If coal fired power plant is implemented, our preserved evergreen rainforest and the heritage of Orang Utans with world recognition will slowly disappear in front of our eyes.
Not to mention Sandakan well known for its seafood, an important fishery industry which is also the main food source and for commercial export to many countries for many decades is a non-stop driven industry in Sandakan, and with the emission of coal, it will definitely cripple this industry in the long run.
There are other views which said coal power plants implemented in other places and serious detrimental effects are not seen yet. Surely this cannot be a reason for the implementation of coal power plant. Serious effects are not seen yet but it’s a known fact already emerging human deformities and other consequences in Japan and United States. The increase rate of asthma attacks and respiratory problems are one of the many consequences of the emission of coal. Mercury, an element found in the emission of coal, is a developmental toxin, primarily affecting foetus development that can cause brain damage, mental retardation, blindness, and many other problems. We do not want or specifically, we do not want to bring unnecessary, problems which we can avoid for our future particularly when our future generation will be affected. We are talking about 20 – 30 years in the future, it will be too late to regret.
As such, we join hands with Tan Sri to work towards creating a better environment, a healthy place for our people and our future generation to live in. We fully support Tan Seri in making Sabah, the provider of natural gas, to be able to be enjoy the most benefits out of it. We concur with Tan Sri for vision that it is high time for Sabah and our people to use its resources to start a Retrochemical plaint in Sabah, thereby providing similar for economy growth.
We condemn the arrogant of TNB and SESB and their insensitivety and irresponsible attitude on the implementation on insisting that Coal Power Plant in the best option to be implemented in Sandakan.
TNB and SESB to ignore the wishes of the Sandakan people is most regretted as our state leader Datuk Masidi Manjun, the minister of Tourism, Culture Environment has mention that coal is the lease option to be consider. We hope TNB and SESB will more respectful to our people of Sandakan as well as to our leader of Sabah.
