Break SESB Monopoly on Electricity

  1. The Sandakan Chamber of Commerce urged the Federal Government to break monopoly and promote competition to drive “enthusiasm for improvement” into the district’s electricity sector
  2. “We appeal to the Federal Government to look into the appointment of alternative Power Supply Agency to overcome the problem of power failures and shortages,” he said. “Regretfully, we again reiterate the imcompetence of TNB and SESB.”
  3. “For 107 days since the end of April till now, we experienced constant power failure and shortage,” he added.
  4. “TNB and SESB have failed the people of Sandakan countless times, what good is a monopoly organization which doesn’t perform but only damage the reputation of the Government?”

KOTA KINABALU: The Sandakan Chamber of Commerce urged the Federal Government to break monopoly and promote competition to drive “enthusiasm for improvement” into the district’s electricity sector. “The Federal Government should seriously consider doing to electricity supply and distribution in Sabah what they did to domestic air services between East Malaysia and Peninsular Malaysia less than a decade ago,” said Chamber Secretary General, Stephen Wong Tien Fatt, in a press statement issued Saturday.

“After MAS’ domestic monopoly was broken and AirAsia came into the picture to give the national carrier a run for its money, domestic and international air services improved one thousand percent quantitatively, qualitatively and especially price wise and everybody is happy,” Wong cited “This problem is actually a golden opportunity for both governments to make the people of Sabah happy with a decisive action,” Wong suggested. “From what we have heard from electrical experts, the solution is not that complex.” Wong said.

“We appeal to the Federal Government to look into the appointment of alternative Power Supply Agency to overcome the problem of power failures and shortages,” he said. “Regretfully, we again reiterate the imcompetence of TNB and SESB.” “For 107 days since the end of April till now, we experienced constant power failure and shortage,” he added. “TNB and SESB being a monopoly power provider have failed grossly in providing the basic amenities to the people of Sandakan thus seriously affecting their social and economic welfare,” Wong claimed.
“Promises to do better have been plenty but none of the promises have materialized. Not only have they failed to honour their words, power failure and shortage have accelerated instead to an intolerable level where immediate attention to stop the rot is warranted,” he said. “The State Cabinet should act urgently to resolve this matter.”

“Everybody knows that a monopolist tends to lack the enthusiasm for improvement when it does not face any challenge from any competitor,” Wong said. “We therefore believe the existence of an alternative agency will promote healthy competition aimed at improving for the society in the long run,” said Wong who called on TNB Chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie, TNB President cum CEO Dato’ Sri Che Khalid Mohamad Nor and SESB managing Director Baharin Din to resign from their existing posts for “totally failing to execute their duty for the benefit of society.” “We stress, however, that we are not trying to stir up any political debate in asking the Federal Government and State Cabinet to intervene in finding replacements for these corporate leaders but the Chamber is just trying to find workable solutions to a problem which has been haunting the people for decades,” Wong asserted. “TNB and SESB have failed the people of Sandakan countless times, what good is a monopoly organization which doesn’t perform but only damage the reputation of the Government?” “Echoing the frustration and voice of the Sandakan folks, we in the Chamber pledge support for the State and Federal Government to work hand in hand to implement the solutions above with immediate effect.”
