“Massive Natural Heritage Destruction at Seguntor – Site for the Sandakan Coal – Fired Power Plant”

Lacking enough green knowledge

BRAVO to Greenman’s letter "Gold Is Coal For Some" (Forum July 12).

By accusing me of re-branding myself as green implies he is against others joining environmental movement as if only he as his group has the sole right to be spokesmen and defenders of the issue.

I have studied hydro power and helped build one. I never got involved with other power sources such as coal, diesel, gas or biomass. I tried solar cell on my roof but ended up wasting my money. I use the Kancil to save fuel and plant lots of green and trees around my house to reduce heat rather than for beauty.

So, I have been a green engineer since long ago. I am collecting my pension and have EPF. So I don’t need to curry favour with anyone.

I don’t need to write on behalf of anyone unlike Greeman who seem to be representing some gas-related businesses. If true some leaders see gold in coal, then Greenman and his group must be seeing diamonds in gas. I see environment conservation in hydro power. Sadly, there is no hydro lobbyist in Malaysia for me to write on their behalf, and therefore Greenman’s wild accusations are my entertainment…..( see more below ).

I agree some environmentalists are selfless people. However, I am not convinced Greenmen and his gang falls into this category, having made personal attacks such as accusing some CEO’s son of having a coal mine in Indonesi without producing proof. When they get a taste of their own medicine, all hell breaks out. Demanding for my identity and calling people mafia is being personal and is equivalent to a physical threat when they lose out in the debate.

Sedition means incitement to rebellion or words causing people to hate the government. Being facelss, confused, blind or laughing stock does not incite people to hate the government.

The same goes for all the others whom greenman suggested to be charged also. They only expressed their opinion without being personal.

Greeman’s  quotation of me is not even honest. After the quote he added his own words "wait for and obey orders".

Every official, executive, manager and MD in all public sectors, GLC, and whatever corporatiesed or private companies are paid to think of ideas, analyze, search for alternatives, and finally present recommendations for actions. However good their recommendations are, it is still the government who will decide what to implement if the issue is a big one, and then the executives will have to obey the decisions, not just wait for ideas/orders as per Greenman.

I am sure he knows this but he must be the type who thinks "gas is best" then go about implementing his "bright ideas" without approval from his boss. Hence, I believe losing his job has nothing to do with trying to save Likas Bay.

I will neither support nor oppose the coal plant. I believe coal plants would only be a temporary solution until hydro potentials are fully exploited and would be removed once other sources of green energy are fully viable,

however, the proposal for the coal plant may have triggered the government to speed up the real green energy which is hydro. In the past, all the hydro proposals seem to be waiting on the shelves or moving at a snail’s pace.

Gas is just like coal. It is not renewable within a human’s lifespan or even for centuries.

So if Greenman opposes coal, I expect him to oppose gas too because he said "there is no such thing as clean coal". There is no such thing as "clean gas" too Mr Greenman. That is the reason I will debate with you right to the end including the cyberspace.

The only difference between coal and gas is that gas admittedly leaves less carbon footprints. Greenman said, gas has less likelihood of price fluctuation. He should explain why the cooking gas prices keeps going up and up.

He said gas has less security problem. Gas pipelines can leak or explode.

Hydro energy produces no carbon, no smoke, very little heat and noise, and does not pollute the river at all. It is renewed after every heavy rainfall. So for a greenman, he still lacks sufficient green sense.

I suggest we have SM Muthu as the next replacement Sabah GM for SESB, or better still the next Managing Director.

I want to see if he can start building a gas power plant anywhere in Sabah or perhaps change colour overnight and start championing the coal plant.

Meanwhile, I have started my blog at blogspot.com to debate Greenman and his gang since I cannot enter their forum sites.

Green Power Engineer.
