TONG KANG AND FISHERMEN ASSOCIATION OF SANDAKAN TAKES FIRM ANTI COAL STAND

The committee together with an elder of the Tong Kang and Fishermen Association of Sandakan make their stand and join the anti-coal battle.

Acting as the spokesman for the group, the experienced 88-year-old elder told the press that he started his fishing life by going out to sea with his father at the age of 4. With so many years of fishing experience no body is more experienced or qualified than he to talk about the effects of pollution on marine life.

He told of the times in the 50’s and 60’s when fishing was abundant and so good that they would return, after every fishing trip, with tons of fish from fishing just in the inner sea of Sandakan. Nowadays, fisherman need to go out to the open sea to fish but even in deep sea, the catch is usually minimum like only a few hundred kgs at a time, if you are lucky.

THERE IS JUST NO FISH IN THE INNER SEA AS A RESULT OF POLLUTION

According to this experienced gentleman this all started with the taking off of the palm oil industry. Oil palm was planted in great number even along the riverbanks.

Over the years, tons of fertilizers and pesticide got washed into the river and eventually into inner sea thereby killing the fish therein leaving us with very little fish now. This is the result of environmental pollution.

But this is not the worst, he added.

Add to it the pollution from the proposed coal-fired power plant then It will be detrimental not only to marine life but also to human life as well.

As concerned and loving parents, we do not wish to put our children and future generation to such suffering caused by pollution, we hereby declare that OUR ASSOCIATION STRONGLY OPPOSE THE SETTING UP OF THE COAL-FIRED POWER PLANT IN SANDAKAN OR ANYWHERE IN SABAH.
