KOTA KINABALU : The Sabah Environmental Protection Association ( Sepa ) claimed Friday that TNB appears to be still pushing for the proposed 300MW coal-fired plant at seguntor , Sandakan .
" We have information that the TNB has applied for the construction of transmission lines from the proposed Sandakan POIC site . " Sepa President Wong Tack told a press conference here Friday.
" We also know that Feb 13 was the last date for the submission of the Terms of Reference ( TOR ) draft to the Department of Environment for consideration but no local stakeholders such as Sepa Sandakan were invited to be part of the TOR drafting panel ," Wong asserted.
" This means from the outset of the EIA process, the voice of the community is being denied whereas one SESB officer and one Minister after another had promised an independent detailed EIA and yet the most important component of an EIA process that is public participation, was brushed aside," Wong said.
" So our only term now is no coal-fired power plant because the EIA process is not credible and this is clear over the last three years," Wong added.
" Why continue to push the DEIA when the proposal ( building a 300MW coal-fired power plant in Seguntor ) has been rejected by the people. They should not waste time and money on an EIA process which is not credible," Wong said.
" Instead, decision makers and the authorities should take note of anxiety of the common folks and accept the democratic process," Wong urged.
" Sepa is datermined to fight on and take legal action if necessary," he told reporters.
Meanwhile, Sepa founder Henry Chok said the " State Government need now make its direction clear,"
" In the case of Maliau Basin, a previous State government made a good decision. And in the case of Likas BAy, another State government made another good decision. Therefore, it’s time for the present State government to make the next good decision on the coal-fired power plant," Chok called.
" Instead of keeping on saying it depends on the EIA, the stakeholders voice is clear, they are anxious, they reject the project and therefore respond to it," he appealed.
The state of feelings over the issue are such that it clearly wise to take a more ‘ bottom-up ‘ approach, said Sepa veteran, Muthu, while continuing to proceed with the project means showing " utter disrespect " to the wishes of the people.
" I appeal to all elected representatives to make clear their stand, either for or against the coal-fired power plant," Muthu added.
