Public Yes needed for coal-fired power plant

KOTA KINABALU: Public acceptance is a requisite if a coal-fired power plant is to operate in Sabah.

This was the message that Energy Commission of Malaysia chairman Datuk Pian Sukro had for state Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan at their meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Tan’s press secretary Andrew Goh said that Pian had said there was no licence issued yet for a coal-fired power plant.

Earlier, Tan conveyed the concerns of Sandakan folk on plans to construct a 300mW coal plant in the east coast district.

Pian said, as an immediate measure to overcome an acute power-supply shortfall in Sandakan, a 100mW diesel power plant would be constructed in the district.

By 2017, he said that power supply in Sabah would be boosted by 915mW with the completion of five projects costing RM6.25bil.
